Open call for artists Acinque
After the success of ACINQUE Sicily., Balloon Project launches the same OPEN CALL on the city of Milan in order to compose a dedicated archive of artist’s books.

The project showcases the outcomes of the call intended for insiders in the field of Italian and foreign independent micro-publishing but also for artists, cultural workers, curators, designers and graphic designers. Those who wish to participate in this call will be asked to create and donate an edition, artist book, object book, fanzine, in a single (or multiple) copy in A5 format (148 x 210 mm) in which, through the use of images, texts, digital and pictorial graphic elaborations, a reflection on one or more aspects of the city of Milan, its urban landscape, its local culture, its past and recent history, and more generally from its material and immaterial heritage is composed.
Project objectives. The collection of editions will be used to create an archive of artist’s books dedicated to the Lombard capital, which is constantly growing and has an open call at certain times of the year. The traveling archive will become a constantly updated collection of signs and images about Milan in book form.
Theme. The city of Milan with its tangible and intangible heritage possesses a very rich history and an ever-living momentum for the future and innovation; ways and rituals of experiencing the urban context, the typical issues of a metropolis, the center/periphery dimensions but also strengths and criticalities that shape its profile. Visual arts, urban culture, literature, lifestyles, food, and its characters, as well as its being an international reference point for the world of fashion and design, provide interesting suggestions for the formulation of a work in book form with a visual and/or textual character. Participants in the call can freely explore, through texts, drawings, images, collages, photographs, extra-media interventions, one of the themes that most enhances the cultural value of the city.
To participate, a copy of the self-published book/fanzine/edition in A5 format (148 x 210 mm), bound or in free-form, with no limit on pages, composition structure or type of binding, must be sent by mail (or delivered brevi manu). The artifact can be printed, made manually, processed by digital software on any type of paper or other medium, as long as it meets the required dimensions (ISO A5 format: 148 x 210 mm). The artifact should be sent to the address: Presso Carosi – Via G. Da Cermenate 9, 20141 – Milan (for any problems regarding shipping contact: +39 328 47 62 719) together with the donation form(downloadable here) to be filled in and signed.
Exhibitions. The artifacts received will be collected in archival form and will be displayed in different locations and at different times of the year. The artifacts collected as a result of the call will be donated by the individual authors to the Balloon Project Cultural Association, which will undertake to promote the archive, works and authors through traveling exhibitions of both the archive in its entirety and selections.
Participation is free of charge.
- The cost of shipping the artifact is the responsibility of the participants;
- Participation implies the author’s acceptance of all the terms listed in this call and stated on the donation form, which must be signed and delivered with the book;
- The organization will not accept books that do not meet the A5 format: 148 x 210 mm (only any extra millimeters will be tolerated due to thickness of covers and/or boxes);
